Today is a special occasion with Swan Song for their 4th year anniversary. The first dram of tonight is a Glen Ord. Glen Ord is a distillery with rich history opened in 1838 and from 1997 onwards is part of the Diageo group used in the ever familiar Johnnie Walker (JW) blends. Since the 1980s, Glen Ord has been producing single malts that I feel are greatly superior to the JW range. I always have a great appreciation for single malt Glen Ords on how their oiliness beautifully matches the floral notes and with great anticipation today I am trying the 40 year bottled by Royal Mile Whiskies.
Initial Nose: Floral, oily, vanilla, chrysanthemum, everything i love about Glen Ords
Nosing after time: Drams becomes more oily with salty notes coming forward, mothballs, slight hints of Werthers Originals sweets come out
Palate: Oily, rich, creamy, waxy, hint of nutmeg
Finish: slight white pepper with oily/waxy texture. Not a long finish but still enjoyable
Reality definitely did not disappoint expectation with this amazing dram. Although only 40.1% abv, bottled at cask strength, this Glen Ord does not disappoint. Strangely I would have never suspected Oiliness to go well with floral characteristics but this combination seems to work wonders. Away from the standard sherry and bourbon cask influenced whiskies this is an amazing dram to enjoy.
