Springbank 18 (OB)

Today's review is something unique as I am reviewing a peated whisky which is far from my preferred choice of enjoyment on type of whisky. My peated selection hails from Campbeltown and expresses a more vegetal peat style as a nicer/gentler contrast to the dirty peat commonly found in Islay whiskies. The prices of Springbank has gone through roof due to the ever increasing demand and is already above the price range of causal enjoyment. Fortunately I managed to purchase this whisky at a much more reasonable price some time ago that allows me to sample it for today. Now on to the review.

Initial Nose: Classic Springbank vegetal peat notes on the nose, butter, sea salt, green apples, slight asphalt and flint, lemon. A really nice balance of sweet, savouriness and peat

Nosing after time: peat become really gentle with sea salt coming through. The citrus notes stay at the background and there's a nice oily/fattiness coming through the nose.

Palate: Dirty earthy notes, mushroom, slight oily/fattiness, pepper, oranges

Finish: Savouriness with light spices and cream.

Although peat is still not my preferred choice of whisky, I feel that the balance of sweetness and vegetal peat style makes Springbank a much more approachable whisky to me than the modern Islays. The nose is really interesting with the combinations of fruit and fat which creates a savoury element of tastiness. The fruit/citric characteristics also really help elevate the whisky by balancing out the peat with a good amount of sweet. I would definitely recommend to enjoy this if you can (especially if you like peated whiskies) as the prices are going crazy.
