Trying Irish whiskies has always been a great enjoyment to me due to the preferred floral notes as compared to the artificial perfume I find in Japanese Whiskies. I have previously tried the 27 year old version that had rich fruity characteristics that reminded me of the 7D mango (Dried mango) snack in Singapore. In great anticipation I purchased a bottle of the 29 year old version to see how it would compare to the 27 year old.
Compared to Redbreast distillery in Ireland, Teeling is like the new kid on the block producing small batch bottlings of Irish Whisky with innovative cask maturation techniques. Teeling distillery opened in 2015 as the first new distillery in Dublin for over 125 years and although their heritage is not as long as Redbreast who's brand started in 1912), they are by no means an inferior whisky.... Now on to the tasting.
Initial Nose: Pineapple, golden kiwis, mangos, custard, mentos sweets, effervescent, tropical fruits, cinnamon
Nosing after time: mangosteen, lemon/lime juice notes with slight chalky notes. After even longer white wine notes are expressed more distinctly
Palate: Really complex, cream, mango, honey sweetness that changes into grapefruit, lychee, orange peel. Beautiful guava and mangosteen creamy notes come out over time.
Finish: white pepper, dried herbs, grapefruit
While the Redbreast 30 was like a dessert platter of red fruits, this Teeling feels more like a basket of tropical yellow fruits. Tropical note that come forward with herbal/slightly bitter notes help to balance out the dram nicely. With more time in the glass the wonderful fruity notes come forward and I highly recommend letting the whisky breathe as you enjoy this dram. Irish whiskies although not cheap, seem to express fruity notes wonderfully and are extremely delicious drams. This makes me greatly anticipate trying more expressions in the future.
